Eddy Current Displacement Transducer
The PR 6423 is a non-contacting eddy current sensor with a rugged construction, designed for extremely critical turbomachinery applications such as steam, gas, compressor and hydro turbomachinery, blowers and fans.
The purpose of a displacement probe is to measure position or shaft motion without contacting the surface being measured (rotor).
For sleeve bearing machines, there is a thin film of oil between the shaft and the bearing material. The oil acts as a damper so that vibrations and position of the shaft are not transmitted through the bearing to the bearing housing.
It is not recommended to use case vibration sensors to monitor sleeve bearing machines because the vibrations generated by shaft motion or position are greatly attenuated by the bearing oil film. The ideal method for monitoring shaft position and motion is to directly measure shaft motion and position through the bearing or inside the bearing with a non-contact eddy current sensor. The PR 6423 is commonly used to measure machine shaft vibration, eccentricity, thrust (axial displacement), differential expansion, valve position and air gap.
